The Guineys department store chain is set to take over one of the vacant BHS units in Belfast city centre.

The unit, in Castle Place, will be the first Guineys outlet to open in Northern Ireland.

The store is expected to open towards the end of this year.

“We are excited to venture into this new market and Belfast, being a major retail destination, provides consistently strong trading figures,” said a spokesman.

“The location is in a prime spot within the city centre and the space is ideal for Guineys to be able to deliver its large product range.

“Guineys offers unbeatable value in home furnishings and fashion and prides itself on having new and exciting deals on offer at all times.”

Guineys said it had no further plans for expansion in Northern Ireland but that it would be opening a new store in Dundalk, Co Louth towards the end of this year.

Accounts filed for the 12 months to January last year recorded accumulated profits of €13.8m at the family owned chain.

The retailer has 10 outlets, including stores in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, and Kilkenny.

It returned to profit in 2015 following the crash.

The most recent accounts show the business had 224 employees, with staff costs of €4.4m.

The business posted an after-tax profit of €2m for the year to the end of January 2017.
